A shortlist of organizations, collectives and spaces who offer affordable rehearsal space for dance.

The Woods Cooperative – Ridgewood, Queens

This rehearsal coop offers hourly rentals at $8/hr, and monthly memberships for those looking for ongoing rehearsal space.  We are a cooperative space for performance artists, bodyworkers, yoga/pilates teachers, and really anyone who needs space. By collectively working to rent and maintain the space, we are able to offer the space to both our members and the community at extremely affordable rates.

Fourth Arts Block (FAB)  – Lower East Side

This non-profit organization manages six rehearsal space within a single block.  Through their Dance Block Program you can rent rehearsal space for $10/hr.  They also do a host of other cultural activities.  Today East 4th Street between 2nd Ave and Bowery is home to more than a dozen arts groups, 12 theaters, 8 dance & rehearsal studios, 3 film editing suites and 1 screening room. Due to FAB’s activism, in October 2005, the City sold the block’s arts tenants 8 properties for $8 and designated it a Cultural District – one of only three official arts districts in the City

Spaceworks – Williamsburg and LIC –

This up-and-coming cultural partner offers easy access through personal key cards.  Subsidized rehearsal rates vary from $12-$16/hr and $10 (off-peak).  Established in 2011, Spaceworks is a nonprofit cultural community development organization dedicated to expanding the supply of long-term, affordable rehearsal and studio space for artists working in New York City.

SpaceFinderNYC – an online tool of Fractured Atlas –

Fractured Atlas has aggregated over 1800 rental spaces in NYC.  Various filters allow you to search by rate, use and location.  Through online magic you can see each space’s calendar and book it directly through the website.  This is a handy tool for finding something specific that could be right around the corner.
