A practice in conversations workshop series w/ lisa nevada

May 16-19* / 2-5pm

*Showing on May 19 at 6pm.

$20 / $70 for all 4 sessions. Register here

With this series of workshops, we will dive into a practice of conversations – physical and verbal – with a focus on bodies in conversation, auditory explorations, and conversations with space. We will move the body first, with a simple, yet vigorous warm-up that will serve as the groundwork for boundless movement exploration. We’ll tune our bodies, expand into a generous movement vocabulary, and mine phrases through the practice of repetition and duration. Specificity will be encouraged, yet participants should remain open to shifts and change. As we dig in to devised movement, and satisfy individual impulses to sound and move, conversations between participants will ensue – both sonic and rhythmic.

Each session will offer a safe environment for folks to connect, and interact with their moving body and spirit. Not only is our goal to converse, but it is also to listen, and come away with a sense of community that we establish during our time together.

New Mexico based choreographer and dancer, lisa nevada is a founding member, co-director, and a resident choreographer for SHIFT | DANCE, an Albuquerque-based presenting platform that serves as a vehicle to elevate and generate awareness for the range of contemporary dance forms within the Albuquerque community. SHIFT | DANCE also brings acclaimed dance artists from around the globe to the city of ABQ with its annual SHIFT DANCE | FESTIVAL.
Nevada’s compositions concentrate on site-specific dances in nature and non-traditional performance settings, as well as the concert stage. Her choreography has been commissioned by Buran Theatre (NYC), 516 Arts (ABQ), Santa Fe University of Art and Design (NM), Radical Evolution (NYC), Tricklock Company (ABQ), John Donald Robb Musical Trust (ABQ), among others.
Nevada draws inspiration from modern dance techniques, improvisation, theatre, and environmental/social engagement. Through choreography, movement direction and performance, she aims to develop a vocabulary of work that delivers a visceral impact and invokes thoughtful deliberation.
Nevada has an MFA in Dance from the University of New Mexico with concentrations in site-specific choreography and performance, embodied history, and teaching. She works regularly with the American Dance Legacy Initiative (ADLI) and is choreographer, dancer and artistic director for her individual project lisa nevada dance.
