Modern Mornings w/ Pepper Fajans

Thursdays, April 6th thru June 1st

10am-12pm // $10

Whether you spend time in a studio, an office, or on a construction site, this is a dance technique class open to novice dancers seeking a rigorous and accessible opportunity to study and exercise. Working with a backbone of Merce Cunningham’s structure we will refine our ability to change directions and make decisions while dancing, and become more versed in the movement range that is unique to each of us. Our goal is to increase both our mobility as movers and our vocabulary as dancers.

Pepper Fajans (born Seattle,1985) is the Founding Director of Brooklyn Studios for Dance (BkSD) and the Brooklyn Touring Outfit. He was the personal assistant to Merce Cunningham and continued to tour with the Cunningham Company as the production carpenter and assistant to David Vaughan through the final world tour. As director of BkSD he partnered with Cadman Congregational Church in 2015 to renovate their 1920’s era gymnasium—through a volunteer effort—into a burgeoning dance studio offering classes, performances, and residencies and community events. Resident artists have included Tatyana Tenenbaum, Colin Gee, Patti Bradshaw, Daria Fain, Jennifer Monson, Dances for Solidarity, Current Harbor, Kensaku Shinohara, Yoshiko Chuma, and Kathy Westwater.

Fajans’ work Co. Venture was presented at Baryshnikov Arts Center in November 2016. His work has also been show in the Puppet Lab at St. Ann’s Warehouse and through Movement Research at Judson Church. His next work will appear at JACK, Brooklyn, August 2017. He has been featured in the New York Times, The New Yorker, The Montreal Gazette, and Culturebot. Fajans is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, a 10-year member of Seattle’s The Royal Famile Ducaniveaux, and a member of the Brooklyn Contemporary Chorus.
