Dance Caribbean presents a series of Caribbean Dance forms and fitness styles to give greater visibility to instructors working in our community and sharing our culture. Dance Caribbean Collective is an organisation dedicated to facilitating Caribbean Dance works, performances and cultural experiences in the Caribbean Diaspora with a focus on Brooklyn, NY.
About the class: Energetic and engaging dance party class led by 2 instructors. Expect to dance nonstop in Caribbean and Afro Karibe styles in celebration of the end of our season. From the roots of West Africa through the Caribbean, and straight to the heart of Hip Hop, Yaminah Legohn will present Afro Karibé® Dance as part of the celebration.
Candace Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago, is a dancer/choreographer/cultural producer/personal trainer and a graduate of Adelphi University fluent in several forms including Modern, Contemporary, Caribbean, Afro -Diaspora with a specialty in Soca Dance. Candace is the founder of Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE an initiative to create space for Caribbean dance work in NYC. She currently produces her own work through the project ContempoCaribe and collaborates with Areytos Performance Works, Renegade Performance Group, Sydnie L. Mosley Dances.
Yaminah Legohn is a choreographer, teacher, motivational speaker, professional dancer and performing artist of West African, Dancehall, Hip Hop, Jazz, contemporary and Modern dance styles. Before moving to New York, Legohn spent time in her home- town Los Angeles, gaining experience in the Hollywood industry as a choreographer, teacher and professional dancer. She has worked with multiple artists such as Shakira, Nick Cannon, N.E.R.D., Killa Mike, Nelly Furtado, Lil Wayne, B.o.B., Fizz & Boog, Mack 10, J Holiday, Tony Toni Toné. In 2010, Legohn founded Art of Legohn, LLC a multimedia arts and entertainment company, that specializes in dance, music, visual arts. In 2013, Legohn launched Afro Karibe®, a diaspora-inspired mix of cultural dances that include West African, Dancehall, House, Hip Hop and Samba. She has taught for Alvin Ailey, EXPG New York, Cumbe, IDA Hollywood, American College Dance Festival, Lines Ballet San Francisco Dance Center and ODC Dance Commons San Francisco. Legohn holds a BA degree in Speech Communications & Dance with an emphasis in choreography from San Francisco State University. Simply put, she lives to spread her love and passion for the arts.
