Kathy Westwater, the recently announced recipient of the 2017 Solange MacArthur Award for New Choreography, creates art that exists in the human body. Described by Dance Magazine as “bloodless and fascinating” and The Brooklyn Rail as “at the limits of the human,” her work responds to contemporary experience and the societal landscape in which it manifests by reimagining the body’s movement potential. Westwater culminates her year-long residency at BkSD with the NYC Premiere of Anywhere, a photo installation with longtime collaborator Anja Hitzenberger, and roundtable talk.

Anywhere by Kathy Westwater

New York City Performance Premiere

With dancers Hadar Ahuvia, Ilona Bito, Amanda Hunt, Alex Romania, and Kathy Westwater

Sound Design by Seung-Jae Lee

Music by Henryk Górecki

Light Design by Rick Murray

In Anywhere choreographer Kathy Westwater asks how a dance might engage with, and itself be, a monument. Central concerns are permanent and impermanent cultural manifestations that register and record the impact upon us of time, war, and climate—economic and environmental—and how these manifestations are rendered and experienced in public and private space. Westwater seeks to choreographically manifest a contemporary heroism found in the everyday—anywhere. Without being about a specific historical time or event, there will be a remembering of something that was lost and something that wasn’t.

Anywhere will be performed by five dancers, Hadar Ahuvia, Ilona Bito, Amanda Hunt, Alex Romania, and Westwater, to “Symphony No. 3” by Henryk Górecki. It features a unique relationship between movement and sound through a sound integration design by Architect Seung-Jae Lee. For the New York City premiere, Rick Murray is creating a light design and installation.

Also featured on the program will be:

Extemporaneousness by Kathy Westwater

New York City Performance Premiere

With dancers Laurel Atwell, Belinda He, Andy Miyamotto, Sari Nordman, Kay Ottinger, Mercedes Searer, EmmaGrace Skove-Eps, and Rainey White

Music by Mary Jane Leach
Since 2002 Kathy Westwater’s choreographic practice has centered on articulating what she describes as the disorganized body. In it the orientation of the dancing body on the central vertical axis is re-imagined. Exploring with eight dancers their individual spontaneous responses to a set of choreographic directions, this dance considers what we derive from an intentional practice of disorganization. Extemporaneous performs the unstable, unbound, and disorganized body.
