Pop-up Residency: Seattle, WA

Brooklyn Studios for Dance organized a group seven of dance artists to explore and participate in Seattle’s contemporary dance community while rehearsing and developing their own work, and offering instruction and presentations to the public.

This was made possible through a generous residency provided by Spectrum Dance Theater and Donald Byrd.

The residency also provided a forum for our core members to discuss the vision and operation of our home studio in NY, and to share our story and organizational history with Seattle artists. To keep costs low to both the public and us, artists contributed their time to see this project manifest and private contributions covered all other expenses.

Why a Pop-up Residency?

We cannot emphasize enough the value of being able to both plan and be spontaneous during this period. With limited experience in Seattle’s Dance cultures, we used this residency to follow inspiration and invitation. We were able to see live performance, connect with artists, invite them into our process, and participate in theirs. Having a home base at Spectrum gave us just that, a home—a place to have a continuous experience around a shared reverence for creative movement. We were able to introduce our projects to a new environment and a new audience, as well as generate new work.
